En mors ubetingede kærlighed til sit barn

A mother's unconditional love for her child

Yasemin Stetler, 32, is an Operations Product Manager at Novonesis and lives in Frederiksberg with her husband Henrik and their 1.5-year-old son Adam.

When we heard Yasemin's story about her journey to motherhood, we were immediately moved by her account of wanting to do everything possible for her child, facing unfair opposition, and yet keeping her head held high. It shows how strong maternal love can be from the very first second, and perhaps even before that?

You can read her account of becoming a mother and her unconditional love for her son Adam in our ninth love story.

Yasemin knows that a so-called “push present” might be more American than Danish. But for her, beautiful, high-quality jewelry is an investment, while also allowing her to materialize her memories in a piece that may one day become an heirloom. That is why Yasemin dreamed of a ring that could remind her of her time as pregnant and what she went through while carrying the couple's first child. That is also why she jokingly told her husband that she dreamed of getting a ring from Line Rossau Jewellery when she had given birth to their son. Fortunately, he listened and asked questions to make sure he would give her her dream ring.

“My husband is very detail-oriented, so he was very particular about it being the perfect ring. That is also why I mentioned Line Rossau Jewellery, because I love the simple, Scandinavian look of her jewelry.”

She received the ring for her 32nd birthday in April, and it was absolutely perfect in terms of what she had dreamed of. “I wear it every day and am reminded of my son every time I look at it. It is one of those rings that goes with everything, whether my hair is in a bun and I am wearing jeans and a t-shirt or if I am dressed up.”

Yasemin has dreamed of becoming a mother since she was a little girl, but when she met her husband, it was not something they were in a hurry to do. For many years they lived life, traveled a lot, and enjoyed each other's company before deciding to get married and start a family.

After four years as a couple, Henrik got down on one knee, and of course, it was a big, resounding “yes.” “I had always thought I would get married before I got pregnant, so just six months after we got engaged, we had a wonderful wedding, and then I became pregnant with Adam.”

Yasemin is a woman who knows what she wants, and she is willing to work to achieve her goals. That is why she stopped drinking coffee even before she became pregnant, and she did a lot of yoga to strengthen her body. It was hard, but she knew it was worth it. She wanted to give herself and her unborn child the best possible start.

As soon as she saw the two lines on the test, she had an enormous protective instinct. It came naturally to her to take care of the little being growing inside her belly, so she continued her healthy lifestyle, doing everything she could to give her little son the optimal conditions to grow in.

But when Yasemin was 27 weeks pregnant, she was urgently admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain. She was afraid that something had happened to Adam. It turned out that her ovaries had twisted around themselves, and she had to undergo abdominal surgery where she risked having him taken out. “I lay completely helpless and cried while I kept asking about my child. I remember the doctor took my left hand and squeezed it while saying they would do everything to protect my little boy. When I woke up after the surgery, the first thing I did was touch my belly and ask if he was still in there, and only when they said yes could I breathe properly again.”

Yasemin describes the experience as traumatizing, and she feared she would lose her son. But it was also a confirmation that her love for her unborn son was already unconditional. A kind of love she had never known before.

She was on sick leave for the rest of her pregnancy until she went on maternity leave. That is why Yasemin was very much looking forward to her son being born so she could hug him and no longer worry about whether he was doing well inside her belly. And in November 2023, after a labor lasting more than 24 hours, Adam came into the world. “When I held him to my chest, I just started crying. It was an absolutely incredible feeling that he was finally here. I was so proud and happy and completely exhausted.”

“Today I can laugh a little at the fact that I thought I would worry less once he was born. It turns out that motherhood comes with an enormous amount of worry. I am responsible for keeping this human alive, and I am always a little worried about whether I am doing it well enough.”

Since then, the worries have become a little less frequent, and Yasemin is happy with her new role as a mother. She enjoys taking care of her little human, and even though Adam is only one year old, he has taught his mother a great deal about life.

Normally, Yasemin is someone who likes things to be beautiful and lovely in the home, but since Adam came into the world, it has become more important that he has space to explore and play, even if it means the house gets a little messy sometimes. “I have become much more patient. Not only with him, but with other people too. My husband has also noticed it.” Even though Adam is very small, she is already practicing passing some values on to him.

“I want him to know that he is his own individual. Even though I love him more than anything in the world, he must know that he is his own person and should do what makes him happy. And not least that it is safe for him to do.” But until then, she enjoys the time when he is still her little baby. Yasemin and her husband love to travel and create memories together. That is why little Adam has already been on four trips with his mother and father.

In addition to the ring from her husband, Yasemin also has My Favorite Letter Gold Pendant with the letter “A,” which of course stands for Adam, and she also bought a diamond ring with two large and three small diamonds, which she has as a reminder of everything she has been through. “I look at the rings on my fingers every day. And they remind me of the time Adam and I were on the operating table and all the power that motherhood is.”
