Jewellery Care

Use and care

Line Rossau recommends that you take off your jewelry before bedtime, washing your hands, showering, and during strenuous physical activity such as sports, cleaning, and gardening, as all of this will cause unnecessary wear on your jewelry.

Gold and silver surfaces

Gold and silver are malleable precious metals. Over time, they will always develop a patina, which only enhances the beauty of the jewelry and tells its story. However, it is possible to have a piece of jewelry polished if desired.

Silver

Silver will always tarnish and/or oxidize over time. This is inevitable and a natural process, and therefore is not a valid reason for a complaint. To preserve the bright surface, we recommend that when you are not wearing your silver jewelry, you store it in a closed plastic or cloth bag to keep oxygen out.

Gold plating

Gold plating is a surface treatment. It is therefore a layer of gold that will also wear away over time. It is possible to have your jewelry replated with gold. We recommend having this done once a year.

  • Price for replating smaller jewelry (rings + small stud earrings): 300,-
  • Price for replating larger jewelry (bracelets + necklaces): 450,-
  • Price for replating jewelry with pearls, which must be removed before treatment: 500,-

Oxidation

Oxidation is a surface treatment that accelerates the natural oxidation process that occurs with silver, especially when you do not wear your jewelry for a period of time. The jewelry is oxidized to make it appear dark gray or completely black. Only silver can oxidize (including gold-plated silver jewelry). With daily use, oxidation will wear off in exposed areas, while it will remain dark in holes, grooves, and other recesses in the jewelry that are not exposed to skin contact. If you would like your jewelry re-oxidized, this is possible.

Rhodium plating

Rhodium plating is a surface treatment primarily applied to white gold jewelry to give the white gold a whiter color. Rhodium plating is a strong surface treatment, but it will also wear away over time, and the jewelry will appear grayer. Rhodium plating can also be black. It is possible to have the jewelry re-plated with rhodium.

Diamonds

Diamonds are said to be the hardest gemstones on earth. This is also true, but a diamond must still be handled with care to prevent it from breaking. Avoid direct impacts on the diamond and anything else that presses on the diamond's setting, as this can cause damage to the stone. We also recommend having your jewelry with inset diamonds inspected once a year, both to have them cleaned and to see if the setting still holds the diamond securely. If the diamond has lost its luster, it probably needs cleaning. Contact us, or mix lukewarm water with dish soap yourself and scrub gently with a soft toothbrush. This will remove the worst dirt and grease from the diamond, and it will shine beautifully again.

Gemstones

Gemstones must be handled with care and, unlike diamonds, may look dull over time as the surface can become worn. Avoid hard direct impacts on the gemstone and anything else that presses on the gemstone's setting, as this can damage the stone. Furthermore, avoid strenuous physical activity such as sports, cleaning, and gardening, as all of this will cause unnecessary wear on the gemstone(s). We also recommend having your jewelry with gemstones inspected once a year, both to have them cleaned and to see if the setting still holds the stone securely.

Pearls

Pearls are nature's little miracles. They have grown in an oyster beneath the sea. Pearls cannot withstand hard impacts, perfume, creams, soap, and other chemicals. All of this will cause the pearl to lose its luster and may even cause it to break. Pearls like water and can be poured over with water occasionally to retain their moisture.

Cleaning jewelry

We recommend having your jewelry cleaned 1-2 times a year, as a lot of dirt and grease accumulates on the jewelry, making it look worn. Contact us, and we will be happy to clean your jewelry for you. The first time is free. Subsequent cleanings cost 80,- each.
